And one, and two, and work that brain now, five, and six. Hopefully you’re ready for a workout this week as we begin exercising the most amazing and important muscle in the body- the brain. Just like exercising your body enhances physical fitness, proper exercise of the mind is essential to train the brain for lifelong learning.
Your child’s brain is an incredibly powerful muscle that needs stimulating and exercise to perform at its peak. From the moment they’re born, your baby’s billions of brain cells are waiting to fire up, connect, and grow. So, how can you help jumpstart these connections? You may be surprised, but research shows the best way to stimulate the brain is through play!
At birth, your baby’s brain is about one-fourth the size of an average adult brain. By age 2, your child’s muscular mind has tripled in size, making these first years the most important for brain workouts. These cranial calisthenics should not stop after the toddler years. Kids and adults can always benefit from a little brain-ercise!
Brain Boosters

Fuel-Up the Five Senses- Get those brains in shape by providing activities that engage the five senses. For babies, hanging a colorful mobile, giving them time on their tummy to improve motor skills, exposing them to various textures, or listening to soothing music are great ways to develop the brain. For older kids, stacking blocks, doing puzzles, listening to various tempos and pitches, and exploring the environment through touch can all play an important role in enhancing curiosity, concentration, and brainpower.
Adult Interaction- Reading aloud to a child is one of the best ways to mature the mind. As babies, your kids will enjoy the melodic rhythm of your voice while you read to them. However, as they grow, they will begin making meaning out of the words and themes you read about. They will apply what they’ve seen in the book to the larger world around them. Also, simply talking to your kids from the time they’re born will show them they’re important and loved. It will also help their brain begin making connections. Before they even begin talking, point out the names of specific objects to your child, talk through the process of what you’re doing as you prepare their bottle or bath, praise and encourage them as they learn new things. The more you talk to your child, the more they’ll begin to assign meaning to objects as well as develop language and vocabulary skills.

Memory Maintenance- Recent research shows babies as young as six weeks old can retain memories for as long as 24 hours. By 16 months old, a child’s memory may go back as far as four months. Developing a routine establishes predictability, comfort, and expectations and can help increase your child’s memory. As your kids grow, family traditions and rituals provide perfect opportunities for reminiscing and tapping into memories. A fit memory helps your child retain skills and remember how to do specific tasks. As your child gets older, it’s important to teach him strategies for memorizing and maintaining memories. Teaching him how to use mnemonic devices, word association, narrative skills, and problem-solving to spark memories will help train his brain and increase brainpower.

Experience New Things- Putting a child in a new environment will almost always ensure a learning experience. Taking a walk outside, adding new toys and books to her collection, exposing her to technology and discovering new places together like the library, the park, or grocery store will surely help build the brain. Giving your child opportunities to explore will teach her to learn through self-discovery, cause and effect, and trial and error. Also, introducing her to other children will help develop social skills and provide cooperative learning experiences as well.

Promote Pretend- A child’s imagination is a priceless gift that helps develop creative thinking and problem-solving techniques that can be used throughout life. Allowing your kids time for make believe gives them the opportunity to practice real-life skills and better understand how those skills are used in the real world. Pretending encourages and increases vocabulary and stretches the brain to new limits.

What ever you want to call it,it was not in my plans to be raising grandkids after 50+. But guess what? It was in God's plans!
So, here I am, in my golden years,raising twin girls.(it was not on my DH plans either,lol) Regardless, after raising 4 boys, it is quite a challenge to be raising girls now. Who was the one who said that girls were drama queens? Believe me ,they were right!

It seems, that more and more grandparents are raising grandkids today. I met a lady the other day that was rasing her great grandkids,2,4,6yrs old!! As you can see, we are not the exception anymore, it is an every day reality.

My bumblebees,that is what I call them, because they are always on the move, are our life and what ever God's plan are, we will embrace it with open arms.
How many of you know anyone raising grandkids. I would love to read about their challenges.

Being a mom means never sleeping through the night again - even if baby does, never peeing alone -at least for the next several years, never wanting to let the evening end without tucking the most beautiful, stinky, drive-you-crazy creatures into bed with a big hug and a goodnight kiss. My kids admittedly drive me insane at moments, but even in the crazy insane days I can imagine life without them. Planning for their futures, praying they are happy and making each moment of their childhood sweet has turned into my daily mission. In a nutshell, they are my life and my happiness.

Take the Tissue Test!

Want spectacular skin? It's easier than you think! You can improve your skin's appearance at any age simply by identifying your skin type and choosing your skin care and makeup products accordingly. If you're not sure what type of skin you have, or haven't assessed your skin in a while, take this simple tissue test to see where you stand.
First, wash your skin with your normal cleanser, but don't apply any toner or moisturizer. Wait 10 minutes, then take four squares of white tissue and use one each to blot your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. If none of the tissues are left with oil on them, you have dry skin. If there is a small amount of oil on all of them, you have normal skin. If there is more oil on the tissues from your nose, forehead, and chin than the one used on your cheeks, you have combination skin. If there is excess oil on all the tissues, you have oily skin.
Now examine the skin care and makeup products you're currently using. Do they match up with your skin type? If not, it's time to go shopping! You'll be amazed how much better your skin will look and feel when you treat it according to its type!

Are you a croaker or a leaper?

Along with the new items I am frequently adding from my store,every so often I run across quotes and readings like this one that help me keep tune with reality. Like my mother used to say "count your blessings", and that is what I am trying to do!

We don't often think about the effect that our words have upon others. Our words do have power and everything that we say has a positive or negative impact on others around us.
There is an old story that is told about an army* of frogs that went leaping through the forest one day when two of the frogs suddenly fell into a deep pit. All of the other frogs gathered around the hole to look down on their two fallen comrades. They all began to sadly shake their heads and to croak out dismal warnings. "It's too deep!" croaked one frog. Another croaked that there was no way that they would ever be able to get out of that pit alive.
The two fallen frogs began to continuously jump as they tried to get out of the pit, but the frogs that were watching kept croaking louder at them that they might as well stop because they were as good as dead and just wasting their time. One of the two frogs finally gave up and heeded the pessimistic advice of the frogs at the top. He quit jumping and literally "croaked" and died.
The other frog just kept right on jumping and leaping harder than ever in spite of all the loud croaks of disapproval from the frogs that were watching around the top of the hole. They kept croaking shouts at him to quit jumping and save himself from all the pain and suffering he was incurring as he leaped and fell back down to the bottom of the pit over and over again.
Finally, he leaped even harder than ever and to the surprise of all the other frogs he jumped right out of the deep pit. The other frogs asked him, "Why did you keep leaping even though we yelled and croaked at you to stop?" It was then that the frog explained to them that he was deaf and he had thought they were cheering for him and yelling words of encouragement to him the entire time!
A little encouragement can go a long way and as Babe Ruth once said, "It's hard to beat a person who never gives up."
Our words do have the power to hurt or to heal. What kind of frog are you? Are you a croaker or a leaper?

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.

Teach the children . . .

Late one Christmas Eve, I sank back, tired but content, into my easy chair. The kids were in bed, the gifts were wrapped, the milk and cookies waited by the fireplace for Santa. As I sat back admiring the tree with its decorations, I couldn't help feeling that something important was missing. It wasn't long before the tiny twinkling tree lights lulled me to sleep.
I don't know how long I slept, but all of a sudden I knew that I wasn't alone. I opened my eyes, and you can imagine my surprise when I saw Santa Claus himself standing next to my Christmas tree. He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot just as the poem described him, but he was not the "jolly old elf" of Christmas legend. The man who stood before me looked sad and disappointed, and there were tears in his eyes.
"Santa, what's wrong?" I asked, "Why are you crying?"
"It's the children," Santa replied sadly.
"But Santa, the children love you," I said.
"Oh, I know they love me, and they love the gifts I bring them," Santa said, "but the children of today seem to have somehow missed out on the true spirit of Christmas. It's not their fault. It's just that the adults, many of them not having been taught themselves, have forgotten to teach the children."
"Teach them what?" I asked.
Santa's kind old face became soft, more gentle. His eyes began to shine with something more than tears. He spoke softly. "Teach the children the true meaning of Christmas. Teach them that the part of Christmas we can see, hear, and touch is much more than meets the eye. Teach them the symbolism behind the customs and traditions of Christmas which we now observe. Teach them what it is they truly represent."
Santa reached into his bag and pulled out a tiny Christmas tree and set it on my mantle. "Teach them about the Christmas tree. Green is the second color of Christmas. The stately evergreen, with its unchanging color, represents the hope of eternal life in Jesus. Its needles point heavenward as a reminder that mankind's thoughts should turn heavenward as well."
Santa reached into his bag again and pulled out a shiny star and placed it at the top of the small tree. "The star was the heavenly sign of promise. God promised a Savior for the world and the star was the sign of the fulfillment of that promise on the night that Jesus Christ was born. Teach the children that God always fulfills His promises, and that wise men still seek Him."
"Red," said Santa, "is the first color of Christmas." "He pulled forth a red ornament for the tiny tree. Red is deep, intense, vivid. It is the color of the life-giving blood that flows through our veins. It is the symbol of God's greatest gift. Teach the children that Christ gave his life and shed his blood for them that they might have eternal life. When they see the color red, it should remind them of that most wonderful gift."
Santa found a silver bell in his pack and placed it on the tree. "Just as lost sheep are guided to safety by the sound of the bell, it continues to ring today for all to be guided to the fold. Teach the children to follow the true Shepherd, who gave His life for the sheep."
Santa placed a candle on the mantle and lit it. The soft glow from its one tiny flame brightened the room. "The glow of the candle represents how people can show their thanks for the gift of God's son that Christmas Eve long ago. Teach the children to follow in Christ's foot steps...to go about doing good. Teach them to let their light so shine before people that all may see it and glorify God. This is what is symbolized when the twinkle lights shine on the tree like hundreds of bright, shining candles, each of them representing one of God's precious children, their light shining for all to see."
Again Santa reached into his bag and this time he brought forth a tiny red and white striped cane. As he hung it on the tree he spoke softly. "The candy cane is a stick of hard white candy. White to symbolize the virgin birth and sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock the foundation of the church, and the firmness of God's promises. The candy cane is in the form of a "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth. It also represents the Good Shepherd's crook, which He uses to reach down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray. The original candy cane had three small red stripes, which are the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed, and a large red stripe that represents the shed blood of Jesus, so that we can have the promise of eternal life.
"Teach these things to the children."
Santa brought out a beautiful wreath made of fresh, fragrant greenery tied with a bright red bow. "The bow reminds us of the bond of perfection, which is love. The wreath embodies all the good things about Christmas for those with eyes to see and hearts to understand. It contains the colors of red and green and the heaven-turned needles of the evergreen. The bow tells the story of good will towards all and its color reminds us of Christ's sacrifice. Even its very shape is symbolic, representing eternity and the eternal nature of Christ's love. It is a circle, without beginning and without end. These are the things you must teach the children."
I asked, "But where does that leave you, Santa?"
The tears gone now from his eyes, a smile broke over Santa's face. "Why bless you, my dear," he laughed, "I'm only a symbol myself. I represent the spirit of family fun and the joy of giving and receiving. If the children are taught these other things, there is no danger that I'll ever be forgotten."
"I think I'm beginning to understand."
"That's why I came," said Santa. "You're an adult. If you don't teach the children these things, then who will?"

Have you seen the alarming studies showing that children — especially girls — start developing negative feelings about their body shape as young as age eight? Experts believe this self-criticism can lead to many kinds of problems, including low self-esteem, eating disorders, secret dieting, and other dangerous behaviors. So what can a parent do to help teach a child how to love herself or himself?
First, make sure you aren't accidentally reinforcing the problem by criticizing your child's appearance or comparing his or her figure to others'. Next, help your child see that eating right and staying active is a great way to nurture oneself and one's body. Third, teach your child to question the pressure to fit a particular "media" image of beauty, and positively reinforce your child's own unique qualities and beauty. And finally, be a good role model by confronting your own body issues and taking care of yourself — and not just when you're at your "ideal" weight. Because after all, when you like your body, you naturally want to treat it right. Exercise Your Bones!

Think calcium is the best way to protect your bones from the ravages of time? Exercise may be even better! Researchers from Penn State found that women who engaged in weight-bearing exercise on a regular basis had better bone mass, even if they had a lower calcium intake! That's because bone, just like muscle, builds strength based on how much strain it bears.
Experts recommend that women get started as early in life as possible, since most bone mass is built before age 30. But it's never too late! Those over 30 can protect the bone mass they have with proper diet and exercise. In short, make sure your calcium intake is adequate — 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day depending on your age — and include activities such as walking, jogging, dancing, hiking, stair climbing, aerobic dance, and resistance training with weights or exercise bands in your schedule three to five times a week. Here's to you and your beautiful bones!

Healthier Lunch Box Choices!
With school in full swing, it's a great time to reevaluate what's in your child's lunch box. Remember, healthy eating habits start young! Not sure where to start the lunch box revamp? The experts at the American Academy of Family Physicians recommend these healthier versions of some old favorites:

Increase the nutritional value of PB&J by using natural peanut butter (no sugar added) and 100 percent fruit jam or jelly.
Jazz up a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce or salsa in place of mayo!
Use tortillas or pita pockets in place of regular bread — and be sure to choose whole wheat whenever possible.
Make an ordinary sandwich healthier by switching to nonfat or low-fat meats and cheeses.
Add barbecue sauce to leftover roasted chicken, pork, or beef to make easy barbecue sandwiches with a nice tang!
Round out the sandwich with veggie sticks and a piece of fruit instead of chips and a cookie.
Give children 100 percent fruit juice or milk to drink instead of soda pop or sugary, artificially flavored drinks
